IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Daniel Leblanc
"Papa Bear"
October 27, 1950 – January 18, 2026
Daniel grew up in Espanola, Ontario, where, like many boys of the 1950s, his childhood was filled with adventure, mischief, and stories that grew better with time. Alongside his twin brother, he managed to find trouble wherever it existed, though always with a grin and good intention. He was deeply close to his siblings throughout his life, fiercely loyal to family, and while he adored most creatures, he never quite shared the same affection for his sisters' cats. At just 18 years old, Daniel and his twin enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, beginning a career that would shape the man he became. He proudly served his country for 25 years, travelling the world and retiring in 1994 with the rank of Sergeant. In 1979, Daniel received the Chief of the Defence Staff Canadian Armed Forces Commendation for saving a woman's life after he and his family came upon a tragic car accident. True to his nature, he quietly left once she was safely in the ambulance, never sharing his name. He was later tracked down by first responders and formally recognized by his chain of command—an honour he accepted with characteristic humility.
Daniel was happiest outdoors, with a fishing rod in his hand or heading out on a hunt. Some of his most treasured memories were made fishing with his daughter Jenny, including many years spent at the Red Lake Fall Classic, and one especially meaningful final tournament shared with his granddaughter Rebecca in 2022. He shared a close bond with his son Steven as well, coaching hockey throughout Steven's childhood before later spending their time together fishing, hunting, and golfing. Yet above all else, Daniel's greatest joy was his grandchildren—and not just his own. He attended every concert, skating show, and hockey game he could, and was rarely seen without a small crowd of children trailing behind him. His love extended naturally to their friends, all of whom adored him. While serving lunches at RLMPS, he became affectionately known by half the school as "Papa Bear." Many people never learned his given name, knowing him simply as the warm, steady presence who made them feel safe, welcome, and cared for—exactly as he did for everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Daniel will be lovingly remembered by his children Jenny (Chris) and Steven, his grandchildren: Rebecca (Dane), Cianna (Josh), Emily (Collin), Hope, Madison, Braxtyn, Olivia, Alyssa, and Mason. Great Grandchildren: Isabella, Kai, & Koah. He is also survived by his twin brother Dennis (Debbie), sister Lilliane (Bob), sister-in-law Patricia, nieces and nephews Jennifer, Chris, Joy, Jason, Nick, Dawn-Elizabeth, Trevor, and Bobby. And his many other great nieces and nephews, the list is long.
He was predeceased by his parents Joe and Elaine and his brother Jack.
As per his wishes, cremation will take place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Red Lake Madsen Public School Breakfast for Learning through the Red Lake Chapel, Box 237, Red Lake, ON P0V 2M0.
