It is with profound sadness the family of Duncan announces his passing on July 24, 2022. Born January 23, 1933 to Archibald and Muriel Wilson ( both deceased). Father to John ( Tiana ) and Amy (deceased 2005). Pappy to John's children Andrew ( deceased 2020) and Juliana. Older Brother to Betty ( Don ) and Uncle Duncan to their children Rob, Doug and Kathy. Also surviving is dear friend Kathy Wilson ( North Bay ) mother to their children John and Amy.
After growing up in the Central Patricia region he attending university in Kingston On. Duncan was a proud Queen's University Graduate in Mining Engineering and spent his mining life at Caland in Atikokan, Griffith Mine and Campbell Mine in the Red Lake area. He is remembered by numerous colleagues. He loved the mining industry and kept active with geologists and discussions about various mining projects long after he had left the workforce. Many people have commented throughout the years his mining knowledge was " second to none."
Politics were also a passion of his. Spending a long time as a councillor with the Improvement District of Balmertown he was heavily involved with the amalgamation of the area into the Municipality of Red Lake. He was thrilled to be elected the first Mayor of the new Municipality of Red Lake and was an honour he cherished for the remainder of his life. Duncan was not one to shy away from any hot button topics as mayor and enjoyed the banter of good discussions around such topics. He was admired for trying to make the right decision for the area and betterment of life for area residents. The Water Treatment Plant in Cochenour was a proud example of that. Duncan loved to champion for the "underdog" or little guy. Living almost all of his life in Cochenour, he loved the knowledge of the "Blue and White Machine" which coincidently were the colours of Cochenour's sports teams ( Comets and Condors ) which he was apart of in a coaching capacity. Duncan was also an avid curler in his younger years and drawmaster for countless bonspiels. His knowledge of a curling draw was a huge asset to the area hosting many curling championships and bonspiels.
To all who knew him he had an uncanny memory and could remember names and events long lost to others. A genuine character, he loved a good joke, dirty lymric or humorous anecdote. A mind as sharp as ever up until his last day. Trivial Pursuit never knew a smarter guy!
The family would like to specifically thank our local angels Don and Doris Coghill for the care, compassion and friendship over the years in helping dad with various needs. We would also like to thank the Medical Team of Professionals at the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital for their outstanding care throughout dad's health challenges as well as the staff at Northwood Lodge for his care over the last three years.
To all that knew him you impacted his life in ways that could never be explained and if you didn't get the chance to meet him you missed out on a real " one of a kind."
Rest easy Dad, you've fought the good fight. ( Of course you loved it , you're a true Scotsman! )
