Obituary

Al passed away peacefully on August 23, 2023 at Northwood Lodge at the age of 80.

He is survived by his children Angela Macumber (Corey Densley), Emily Bates (Sam), Jennifer Wilson (Cory), Scott Macumber (Amanda), and their mother Rosalie, grandchildren Brendon (Jennifer Wojtowicz), Cameron Wilson (Alyssia), Matthew Bates (Melanie), Clayton Wilson (Chantiel), Krista Bates, Erica Wilson, Kyle Bates, Brody Macumber, Ava Macumber, Madden Macumber, great grandchildren Kenadee and Finlee Keye, Athena Bates, and Cooper Wilson. He is also survived by siblings Stephen Macumber, Gloria Kasunich, and Charles Macumber as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Mae and Elmer Macumber.

He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on March 15, 1943 and moved to Sudbury, ON where he served in the Canadian Militia as a reservist. He then worked as a chef at Murray's Restaurant and then a Crane Operator at INCO in Sudbury, ON until he moved his family to Sault Ste. Marie where he was a cage tender at a close by copper mine.

Then Al moved his growing family to Red Lake in 1973 where he worked underground at Campbell Mine until 1977. He then went to work at and eventually manage the Red Dog Restaurant and Motel until 1986. He then worked at Northsite Security from 1986 to 1994. During some of this time he also an entrepreneur and ran his own store called Al's Aquarium and Pet Supplies.

In 1994, his life shifted after a stroke and his focus became recovery and he worked hard at regaining his independence spending his summers at Pakwash Park with his grandkids and friends. He became the Honorary Mayor of Pakwash.

More recently, he suffered another stroke and further health complications which ultimately saw him reside at the Northwood Lodge until his passing with his family by his side.

His smile, laugh and love along with his unfailing positive attitude will be missed by his family and all that knew him.

A public celebration of his life will take place at the Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday, September 30th at 10 am with Sam Bates officiating.

Interment will follow in the Woodland Cemetery.
