Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helena Maria Siemaszko, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who departed peacefully at the age of 88 at her home, just as she wished.

Helena was born on August 30,1937 and raised in a small village in Iwkowa, Poland. She grew up during the tumultuous years of World War II and the subsequent advent of communism. These experiences shaped her strong character and steadfast spirit, instilling the values of resilience and compassion that she carried throughout her life.

In 1969, Helena embarked on a new adventure when she married and immigrated to Canada, bringing her rich culinary heritage to her adopted home. For decades, she worked tirelessly as a cook in all the local restaurants and Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Hospital where her traditional dishes became a source of comfort and joy for many. Her soups, pierogies, cabbage rolls, and borscht were not merely meals; they were vessels of love that nourished both body and soul, feeding her community and bringing people together.

Helena's kitchen was a place of warmth and hospitality. She believed that food showed her unconditional love and generosity, which knew no bounds. Time spent with her was always filled with hearty laughs, engaging stories, and delicious aromas, creating fond memories that will be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know her.

She leaves her devoted children, Ania and Chris, and her loving grandchild, Niko, who will carry her spirit and teachings forever in their hearts. Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Red Lake community for the love and support received during this difficult time.

We would like to thank the police, paramedics, Father Justin Eze and Tracy Pryndik and Dean Lachapelle of the Red Lake Funeral Chapel, for their kindness and professional assistance on the day of Helen's peaceful passing.

We would not have been able to fulfill her wishes without the community's unwavering support and countless acts of kindness over the years, both large and small. With kind appreciation to Zosia Eichenlaub, Cathy Majewski & Robyn Clayfield, Donny Aiken & the Aiken family, the Harmony Centre, Mary & Daniel Wesolowski & the Wesolowski family, Kelly & Johnny Baranesky, Jaclyn & Ross Jenner, Pearl & Grace Fleming, Sunnybrook Hospital and many others. We will cherish them all.

As we remember Helena, we celebrate a life filled with warmth, kindness, and a passion for nurturing others. She will be greatly missed, but her love will continue to resonate in the hearts and kitchens of those she touched.

A funeral mass will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church on Saturday, March 28th at 11 am with Father Justin Eze officiating.

Donations in her memory may be made to St. John the Apostle Catholic Church through the Red Lake Chapel, Box 237, Red Lake, ON P0V 2M0.
