It is with great sadness that the family of Madeleine Oakes announces her passing on September 2, 2025, at the Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital, following a courageous seven-month battle with cancer.

Madeleine will be lovingly remembered by her husband Chris; her children Richard and Samantha (Travis); and her cherished grandchildren Zander and Scarlett. She is also deeply mourned by her mother, Aurore; her sisters Lucie (Brian) and Monique; her brother Guy; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

She was predeceased by her sister Lise, her father Jacques, and her father-in-law Allan.

Madeleine pursued her education at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, where she obtained her teaching degree. She went on to share her passion for learning as an educator in the Red Lake area. In 2018, she retired as the principal of the local French Catholic school and later continued her dedication to education by serving as a trustee for the Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boreales.

Beyond her professional life, Madeleine embraced each day with energy and warmth. She enjoyed travelling, golfing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and even spending time in the boat with her beloved husband, patiently joining him on his quest for walleye. Known for her bright smile, kind words, and attentive ear, Madeleine's presence brought comfort and encouragement to all who knew her. She had a remarkable gift for organization and shared it generously, volunteering her time with the Ladies' Golf Club, the Red Lake Hospital Foundation and the Retired Teachers' Association.

The Oakes family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the Red Lake community for their support throughout Madeleine's cancer journey, as well as to the doctors and staff at the Red Lake Hospital, with special thanks to Dr. Zielke for her compassionate care.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 20th at 1 pm in the Evolution Curling Club Lounge. A service and interment will be held in Elliot Lake at a later date.
